The sky turns amber, an air quality alert pops up on your phone, and outdoor plans shift indoors. For many of us, this is part of summer now. Longer fire seasons, larger wildfires, and smoke that travels farther than ever before have made air quality an environmental health consideration for an increasing number of people.
Here's what wildfire smoke exposure means for your health, why it matters even if you live far away from any fires, and how a practical, layered approach can help you support your body's natural systems of resilience.
More than just wood smoke
Wildfire smoke is more than the smell of burning trees and vegetation. Modern fires burn homes, vehicles, electronics, plastics, and other everyday materials alongside forests, releasing a complex mixture of microscopic particles, gases, and combustion byproducts, including carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), heavy metals, and fine particulate matter known as PM2.5.
PM2.5 particles are roughly thirty times smaller than a human hair, small enough to penetrate deep into the respiratory tract and travel hundreds — even thousands — of miles from the original fire.
