Broccoli sprouts: The tiny plant with powerful cellular potential

When broccoli sprouts are damaged in the field, such as by insect feeding, myrosinase converts glucoraphanin into sulforaphane — a powerful phytonutrient that helps the plant respond and defend itself.
This natural process allows us to access sulforaphane. When we crush or chew broccoli sprouts, glucoraphanin is hydrolyzed by myrosinase, yielding sulforaphane. This potent substance supports our cellular defense systems, antioxidant defenses, and natural detoxification pathways.*
It's also worth noting that sulforaphane is classified as a monofunctional inducer. This means it only activates phase II detoxification enzymes, without activating the phase I cytochrome P450 enzymes that can generate unwanted reactive compounds. This helps to support safe and efficient detoxification.*

Preserving broccoli sprouts’ natural chemistry
The amount of sulforaphane available from fresh broccoli sprouts can vary based on growing conditions, storage, preparation, and the plant’s natural enzyme activity. This can make it challenging to consistently access the unique benefits of sulforaphane from broccoli sprouts alone.
One approach to solving this consistency problem is enzyme activation prior to encapsulation — capturing the same reaction that happens naturally in the plant, but in a standardized form.
